The City recently adopted a Specific Plan for the Broadway Valdez District, a neighborhood just north of downtown Oakland, adjacent to Lake Merritt. The District, an easy walk from 19th Street BART, is envisioned as attractive, regional destination for retailers and visitors. The Plan calls for a "complete" mixed-use neighborhood that is home to quality jobs, diverse housing opportunities, and a complementary mix of retail, dining, housing, entertainment, office and medical uses. The neighborhood offers a range of development opportunities, from the reuse of existing historic buildings to new construction on existing parking lots and other opportunity sites. A programmatic environmental impact report was certified for the Specific Plan, creating the possibility of a streamlined entitlement process for projects consistent with the Plan.
